'Detective Pikachu' Movie Is Still A Thing, Casts Lead

Growing up in the 90s, I was a part of the Pokemon phenomenon at its peak. I played all the games, collected the cards, obsessed over the show. I even remember when the first movie came out I tried to collect all of the toys from the Burger King kid's meals. So when Legendary announced last year their plans to make a live-action Pokemon movie, the hype was real. But when they then announced that the live-action film would actually be based on a 2016 spin-off game entitled Great Detective Pikachu, I, like the rest of the world, let out a simple "huh?"

Not much has been said about the Detective Pikachu movie since its announcement in the summer of 2016, but that all changed today. Justice Smith, star of Netflix's short-live The Get Down, has been tapped for the lead role. Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing from a script by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

I'm still not sold on a Detective Pikachu film, but if they announce Danny Devito as the voice of Pikachu they just might win me over....

Detective Pikachu does not currently have a release date.
