Why Was 'Fast & Furious 9' Delayed? Tyrese Calls Out The Rock

This past week, Universal pushed back the release date of Fast & Furious 9 by a full year, from April 19, 2019 to April 10, 2020. That's a big change, but not uncommon when it comes to blockbuster filmmaking. Absent from those reports was why the release was delayed. Now, thanks to franchise co-star Tyrese Gibson, we might have some answers.

It sounds like the main reason for the delay is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's highly busy schedule. Tyrese posted this to his Instagram:

In case Tyrese goes back on his word and takes down this image, it reads:
#PSA Congratulations to @TheRockand your brother in law aka 7 bucks producing partner @hhgarcia41 for making the fast and the furious franchise about YOU - And like you, DJ even if they call I will not be deleting this post - Gn folks see you in 2020 April #FastFamily right? Nah..... it's about #TeamDewayne #3yrs will it be worth the wait? #NoShaw just Hobbs will this be another #BayWatch? Guys guys just relax I'm just a passionate film critic
While The Rock's filming schedule looks to see him busy with Jungle Cruise and another season of Ballers next year,  it looks like the reason for the Fast & Furious 9 delay is the spin-off movie focusing on Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham's characters, Hobbs and Shaw. Noteworthy in Tyrese's Instagram post is the hashtag #NoShaw. It's unclear if this means Shaw won't actually be involved in the spin-off, he's absolving Statham of any blame for the delay, or some other reason.

This Instagram post follows a series of posts made by Tyrese in September, before the delay was announced. Those posts were deleted, but Toronto Sun managed to save them before they were taken down. In the posts, Tyrese urged Johnson not to take part in the Hobbs spin-off, at least not until the completion of Fast & Furious 9.

“If you move forward with that #Hobbs Movie you will have purposely ignored the heart to heart moment we had in my sprinter - I don’t wanna hear from you until you remember what we talked about - I’m on your timeline cause you’re not responding to my text messages - #FastFamily is just that a family... We don’t fly solo.”
“I have never and will never have a problem with this major movie star he’s my brother.... I repeat ever....... bro just being honest I didn’t like Bay Watch lol - but I did rent out 2 full theaters and take a bunch of kids with my daughter from her #PrivateSchool to support Moana!!!! ( I was surprised you could sing so well ).... oh s---!!”
“I’m simply trying to reach him cause he won’t call me back about this solo #HobbsMovie I want you to shoot it just not right now cause the #Fast9 release date has already been announced and we can’t let our loyal fans #FastFamily or our loyal fast and furious FANS down on any level from pushing the date.”
“I never ever go public with private family issues.... Once you hit me back I will delete every post.”
“Just got out of the hospital still recovering thank you guys for your prayers and love.... I’m a real champion and champions are never down for long.... This is not a #Rant I’m no Rock #Hater and I don’t want his #Life I love my own...... I’m doing this for the #FastFamily I’m loyal and I apologise for being loyal but dammit I am”

It's worth noting that the Hobbs spin-off does not currently have a release date or any attached writer/director. That said, Universal does have an "Untitled Event Film" scheduled for release August 16, 2019.

UPDATE: Universal has just officially dated the Hobbs/Shaw spinoff for July 26, 2019 and confirmed franchise vet Chris Morgan will write the script.

This should be an interesting story to follow moving forward. Fate of the Furious also suffered on set drama, that time between Johnson and Vin Diesel. That film suffered from the actors' beef, causing Hobbs and Dominic Toretto to never truly interact and awkward editing to give the illusion they filmed scenes together. We're nearing the point where they may just have to CGI in Johnson in post.
