'The Last Man on Earth' Season 4 Episode 1 "M.U.B.A.R." Recap

Remember when Last Man on Earth opened season 3 introducing and then immediately killing off Jon Hamm? And before that in season 2 when they introduced Will Ferrell only to immediately kill him off in similar fashion? Well, we can now add Jack Black to that list as Roy, who died doing what he loved most, being alive. It’s a joke of seriously diminishing returns, so from the offset of this season premiere I was a bit worried. Luckily, the show quickly found its sea legs to deliver a solid premiere.

Picking up where last season’s cliffhanger left off, Pamela (Kristen Wiig) shoots Pat, who in turn shoots Roy (Jack Black), before Pat can finally be put down once and for all. After a funeral ceremony that involved decapitating Pat and sending his head and body away in opposite directions on two separate jet skis, things got back to a bit of a normal. Well, as normal as Last Man On Earth can get.

Carol begins to get jealous when she notices Pamela seems interested in Tandy. When someone laughs at every joke Tandy makes, something MUST be afoot. Pitting Kristen Schaal and Kristen Wiig against each other is a quirky comic matchup for the ages and I hope the show can somehow wring more out this dynamic moving forward.

Meanwhile, after an anchor mishap, Gail and Melissa have set the gang’s boat adrift causing everyone to be lost at sea. By episode’s end they can see an island in the distance. They don’t know where they are, but at least they’ll be on land. Things go haywire when Pamela, after overhearing Carol voicing her concerns about their new addition to the rest of the gang, kidnaps Tandy and strands the rest of the group on a life boat.

So now we have Tandy being held prisoner by a lonely Pamela as the rest of the group arrives on an island that’s revealed to be not quite as uninhabited as they think.

Overall, I thought this was a very solid season premiere. There were some huge laughs, like Carol exclaiming “He’s reassembling!” as the jet skis carrying Pat’s head and body collided. There was also some plot advancement when it comes to the direction of this season. I don’t imagine Kristen Wiig will stick around long, so I’m sure Tandy will find his way to the island eventually. How Pamela is disposed of is the real question. Also, who’s on the island? WHERE is the island? There’s a lot of questions that need to be answered and I’m excited to see what happens next.
